In the middle of the on-going search for free or next to free games I bumped into a link offering cheap copies of Torchlight. Such links are often best avoided but this was pointing straight to the Steam download service. Safe territory and source of a few classic bargains over the years.
Torchlight’s comic art style looked good when the game came out recently but the idea of paying full price for a Diablo 2 clone meant that it missed the cut. Not this time round with Steam offering a $9.99 US price and a £7.49 UK price.
A quick download, (registration required), and the dungeon mayhem was good to go. The streamlined interface, the aforementioned comic art and the monsters in every direction kept me at the computer until about half-an-hour ago. By then it was pretty clear that it deserved a post.
Torchlight isn’t going to, or trying to, win any awards for novelty. It’s also predictably merciless in terms of the standard death-dealing, destruction model. That said the game is a lot of fun and the violence is cartoon.
There’s also a certain subtlety to the gameplay, which is cleverly paced and intense. Torchlight was designed by much of the team behind Diablo 2 and they haven’t lost their touch. The wealthier among us may even prefer to show a bit of extra support for the company by paying a bit more at the official Torchlight site.
